<!--[if !vml]--><!--[endif]-->Relationships can be sources of enormous comfort, fun and support, equally they can also bring with them distress, despair, confusion and frustration at various times.  As a relationship progresses and changes there is differing levels of energy and attention being applied to the relationship.

Relationship problems tend to occur in fairly predictable ways, usually coming to crisis points when one or both partners are experiencing low levels of engagement or enthusiasm.

Partners do not always have the same level of emotional connectedness, or the same level of sexual interests.  Sometimes stressful external or personal issues experienced by either individual alone can cause a breakdown in the relationship.Other difficulties, like communication or support issues between partners, may remain unresolved for too long, putting overwhelming stress on the relationship.

Common communication problems include one or more of the partners becoming too demanding or rigid when communicating. At the other extreme, the partner may withdraw away from communication and refuse to negotiate. The other partner in turn may perceive withdrawal as rejection or lack of concern.

At this point the couple are in conflict and the relationship can become unhealthy and breakdown altogether. When partners are committed to remaining together, all of these issues can be addressed openly and honestly.  Improving a relationship sometimes needs concerted work. When people are optimistic about the future of their relationship there is the potential to work through the relationship issues. <!--[if !vml]--><!--[endif]-->
